What is chronic pain? Unlike acute pain, which does have some redeeming qualities associated with healing, chronic pain does not. Chronic pain is pain that simply outlasts its usefulness towards clinical healing. For instance, it does not warn your body against injury or illness nor does it aid during the rehabilitative stages of recovery. Frankly, chronic pain has a mind of its own. It seems to break all the rules about normal properties of cellular repair, organ function, and nervous system optimization, which is the exact opposite of what pain is intended to do. Essentially, chronic pain significantly contrasts the benefits of acute pain.

What is chronic pain? When pain continues beyond ten to fourteen weeks, it graduates into the chronic pain state, and within this stage additional pain syndromes reveal themselves. If you’ve reached this point, you’re probably drowning in physical torment and are experiencing feelings of hopelessness. Like sailing on the ocean without a compass, your body has somehow gotten off course from healing and now has drifted into the stormier waters of painful afflictions and overwhelming life challenges.
Your situation is not isolated. Moderate to severe chronic pain and its destructive patterns affect an estimated 10 percent of the U.S. population. Experiences with pain are growing by leaps and bounds throughout our society. On the other hand, what happens when you have an injury and your body does not provide a pain-free outcome? It feels like a betrayal of trust when pain persists and freely invades your body. What has happened to this innate healing quality that once functioned so efficiently? Sooner or later you’ll probably ask the question, why me? I’ve been in this very place. It is a place where you begin mistrusting your body, and eventually, maybe question everything else about who you are.
